Professor Wolfgang Glatzer from Frankfurt am Main, the honorary Chairman of the Third International Conference ”Towards Ouality of Life lmprovement”, said in his opening lecture: ”In times of war and expulsion thinking about quality of life did not arise. Sorrow and harm were an immediate burden and it was obvious for everybody which conditions should be improved first. [...] to have a house and a partner had absolute priority. Not much research is necessary to gain this insight. [...] peace and certain wealth arę basie conditions for creating and improving quality of life. Ouality of life depends significantly on global political conflicts and economic processes. This dependence increases and therefore it is necessary to monitor quality of life not only in regional and national, but also in global terms”.
This volume is a good source of information about the quality of life research carried out in transition countries, and an overview of recent developments in the most important fields of materiał welfare as well as subjective well-being. Specific topics of quality of living arę usually investigated within the framework of generał methodology of social sciences, sociology and particularly economy. The results of empirical research concern the well developed countries, having a rich tradition of quality of life studies, such as the United States, Great Britain, Germany, as well as the countries with poorer tradition, like Poland, Ukrainę, China or Lithuania. This volume provides therefore an invaluable aid for comparative study of leveis of living in the East and West.
